Functions of Blood
Explain the functions of blood.
Blood performs several important functions in the body. Which can be grouped into two: transport and protection functions.
*Transport Function*
Blood transports substances throughout the body, including:
Oxygen from the lungs to body tissues.
Carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs for removal.
Nutrients (such as glucose, amino acids, and vitamins) from the digestive system to cells.
Hormones from endocrine glands to target organs.
Waste products to organs like the kidneys, lungs, and skin for excretion.
*Protection Function*
Blood helps defend the body by:
Fighting infections through white blood cells and antibodies.
Blood clotting through platelets to prevent excessive bleeding when injuries occur.
