Role Play Script: Community Meeting on Environmental Conservation
Role Play Script: Community Meeting on Environmental Conservation
Duration: 25–30 minutes
Target Group: Undergraduate or senior secondary learners
Objective: Learners will practice empathy, communication, and collaborative problem solving by simulating a community dialogue on balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
Step 1 – Scenario Introduction (Teacher Script)
"Our community is facing a dilemma: economic development projects promise jobs and growth, but they also risk damaging the environment. Today, you will role play a community meeting where different stakeholders must negotiate a plan that balances both priorities."
Step 2 – Role Briefs (Distribute to Groups)
• Farmer: Concerned about land use, crop yields, and long term sustainability.
• Government Official: Focused on economic growth, infrastructure, and public approval.
• Youth Activist: Advocates for climate action, future generations, and sustainable practices.
• Business Owner: Interested in profit, expansion, and community development.
• NGO Representative: Promotes environmental conservation, community education, and policy advocacy.
Step 3 – Role Play Activity (15 minutes)
• Groups prepare short statements (2–3 minutes each) presenting their perspective.
• Teacher facilitates a community meeting simulation where each role presents, debates, and negotiates.
• Learners must attempt to reach a consensus plan balancing economic and environmental needs.
Step 4 – Debrief & Reflection (10 minutes)
Teacher Prompts:
• “What perspectives did you empathize with most strongly?”
• “How did communication shape the negotiation process?”
• “What problem solving strategies helped move toward consensus?”
• “How does this activity illustrate authentic pedagogy?”
Learners reflect individually or in small groups, connecting the experience to constructivism (knowledge building), experiential learning (learning by doing), and socio cultural theory (collaboration and dialogue).
Assessment Suggestions
• Formative: Observe participation, empathy shown, and quality of communication.
• Reflective Journal: Learners write about how role play helped them understand diverse perspectives.
• Peer Feedback: Groups comment on realism and inclusivity of each role’s contribution.
