Mini Lesson Simulation Plan: Public Health Crisis Response
Mini Lesson Simulation Plan: Public Health Crisis Response
Duration: 30 minutes
Target Group: Undergraduate education or social science students
Objective: Learners will experience authentic pedagogy by engaging in a simulation that requires decision making, collaboration, and reflection on real world challenges.
Step 1 – Scenario Introduction (5 minutes)
Teacher Script: "A sudden outbreak of waterborne disease has been reported in a local community. Cases are rising quickly, and the community is demanding urgent action. Today, you will simulate a crisis response meeting where different stakeholders must decide on immediate and long term interventions."
Step 2 – Role Assignment (5 minutes)
Learners are divided into groups and assigned roles:
• Local Government Official – Responsible for policy and resource allocation.
• Health Officer – Focused on medical response and prevention.
• Community Leader – Represents residents’ concerns and cultural practices.
• NGO Representative – Offers external support and advocacy.
• Educator – Ensures awareness campaigns and school safety.
Each group receives a role brief with priorities, constraints, and challenges.
Step 3 – Simulation Activity (15 minutes)
• Each role group presents their perspective (2 minutes each).
• Groups debate and negotiate possible interventions.
• Learners must reach a consensus plan balancing urgency, resources, and sustainability.
• Teacher facilitates discussion, ensuring all voices are heard and guiding toward decision making.
Step 4 – Reflection & Debrief (5 minutes)
Teacher Prompts:
• “What decisions were most difficult to make, and why?”
• “How did collaboration and diverse perspectives shape the outcome?”
• “Which elements of authentic pedagogy were evident in this simulation?”
• “How might this activity be adapted to different cultural or classroom contexts?”
Learners reflect individually or in journals, connecting the experience to constructivism (knowledge building), experiential learning (learning by doing), and socio cultural theory (collaboration and dialogue).
Assessment Suggestions
• Formative: Observe participation, empathy, and quality of decision making.
• Summative: Learners submit a short report outlining the consensus plan and its rationale.
• Reflective Journals: Learners evaluate how the simulation illustrates authentic pedagogy and its transferability.
